Woman of monumental sculptures

Feature

According to art historian and critic Juha-Heikki Tihinen, sculptor Laila Pullinen (1933) has carried out enough work for several lifetimes: she became a prolific maker of monumental sculptures and has almost singlehandedly established a vast sculpture park.

The technique she often employs to create her sculptures is to combine bronze with smoothly finished stone. During the 60’s Pullinen also experimented with exploding and shooting stone. Pullinen is also well known for her skilful drawings and as one of the pioneers of land art in Finland.

The titles of her work often refer to Classical mythology while her visual imagery travels broadly amidst abstract modernism and classical representation. She also strongly underlines the importance of understanding cultural history, that for her, was not available in Finland so she continued her studies in Italy and while working in Paris during the end of the 70’s.

At the age of 76, Pullinen still works actively, time after time returning to struggle with the same questions: of origin and beauty, of discourse between the nature and the culture.
